Step into the light…

courage

I love the stark beauty of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy – that so much can be compressed into a few brushstrokes and still remain a thing of beauty. The I-Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes, contains similar wisdom, compressed into a brief statement that unfolds itself to its reader. This one represents ‘courage’.

Many of us feel that we have made mistakes, and many of us flee the implications of those mistakes. Maybe we run and hide, pretending that they never happened, that perhaps if we’re lucky it will all go away. Sometimes we beat ourselves up, continually flagellating ourselves, wracked with guilt over a decision or a choice that we made way back when. Sometimes we blame others, content to lay the responsibility for where we have found ourselves at someone else’s feet, whether we blame a colleague, a friend, a partner – or the government, the economy, our employer.

Only when we truly stand and courageously face our mistakes, when we own up to them and recognise our part in making choices that ultimately did not serve us, that did not help us get where we want to go, will something shift. Only when we take back the responsibility for things ‘going wrong’ (although in truth everything is working out just perfectly), when we drop the pretence, shrug off the illusions that we hide under – when we look at the situation clearly and without prejudice – only then will a light develop out of the confusion and guilt. As we choose to learn from the situation in humility and honesty, then we find ourselves in a place of deeper wisdom, more deeply rooted and grounded, more true to ourselves and with greater integrity. At that point, doors start to open, opportunities present themselves, and a path forward becomes clear.

And remember – we need to go easy on ourselves where we might have chosen unwisely. because each and every situation that we find ourselves in is an opportunity for growth, an opportunity to become more truly real – an opportunity to step into the incredible truth of who we really are.

PS – I’ve spent the last couple of days finessing a couple of new blogs – there will be an announcement coming soon but in the meantime, all the posts for “You are amazing” can be found over at timhodgson.org/amazing – and you can sign up there by email to make sure you get every single post.
