The Hawai’ian Oracle–Deciding my Destiny (part 2)

As promised, part 2 of my weekend post. Hope you got some insights from yesterday’s picture, which was the island of paradise, Kāne Huna Moku, from Rima Morrell’s Hawai’ian Oracle cards. And perhaps I ought to apologise in advance for the apparent apostrophe abuse in today’s post. Hawai’ian as a language has only 12 characters, and makes major use of the glottal stop which is the ‘ character. It’s pronounced like a pause and almost a click in the back of the throat. Anyway – where was I… ah yes.

Yesterday, I talked a lot about learning to listen and some of the ways that we hear from our Higher Self/ The Universe/ God/ Divine Intelligence (you choose!). And I talked a bit about how I had got to the point of believing what I did. The post, by the way, is HERE if you need to catch up (believe me, it’s worth reading as I put some of my deeper and more personal thoughts on the table!)

But sometimes, no matter how far we are along our path, we get stuck. The heavens seem like brass, there’s no guidance to be had. We feel lost, alone, bereft, abandoned. It feels dark and hopeless. It’s on days like that that maybe we need to try a new tack. Here’s one of the ways I use to jump out of that loop.

People have often been puzzled as to why I sometimes read my horoscope or pick up an angel card. Traditional Christians throw a fit and worry about me wandering from the path (trust me, wandering from the path is often a lot more fun – you get to see all sorts of things you wouldn’t otherwise see – and you get the opportunity to change paths if you feel like it). What I don’t like is how these things can become prescriptive – read your horoscope, and that’s your day set in stone. I do have to say that I’m not fond of Tarot cards, ‘cause I find them a little dark and oppressive – and a lot of angel cards look far too Raphaelite… my vision of angels is far more impressive and powerful (less cherubic and with a lot less lace). But other people love these, and so I say ‘use what speaks’.

In Hawai’ian Huna, they actually use their divination tools to ‘change the future’ – if you don’t like the outcome you get, then change it. The set of shaman stones I was given in Hawai’i actually contain the advice “If you don’t get the answer you want, you may be tempted to throw again. However, this tends to enhance feelings of fear and desperation. Instead, confidently grasp the answering stones and switch their positions, shouting “I am the author of my life story, this is the new outcome”. I really like that, because it puts me in charge of my life. It helps me to decide what I want.

So when I found Rima Morrell’s Hawai’ian Oracle cards in a bookshop in Hilo, they sounded like a great idea – because the meaning of the cards isn’t prescriptive – it’s up to you how you feel about the cards you’ve drawn – create your own interpretation.

So, feeling a little stuck and lost today, I drew a ‘Manifesting your Mana’ spread. ‘Mana’ is Hawai’an for ‘power’ – and that’s what I wanted to get in touch with.

First out the pack was Koa’e, the white tailed tropic bird, for ‘The Depths’ – the subconscious.

Koa’e speaks of the need to overcome obstacles through changing perception – bringing a gift of trust… the tropic bird nests on the highest cliffs and is the only bird that can reach them.. but requires a leap of faith to soar that high.

Second out was ‘Auku’u, the black crowned night heron, for ‘The Coral Reef’ – the obstruction.

‘Auku’u is a darker card, representing separation, the need to take a leap into transformation. It speaks of a time of ending, of completion before a new branch grows – perhaps a time to travel deeper into Universal Mind, to rest and relax and let go.

And finally, Koholā, the humpback whale, for ‘The Shore’ – the materialization of the promise. This is one of my favourite cards, so for me it’s a wonderful promise.

Koholā is about knowledge, about finding balance and stepping into the divine gift. It speaks of harmonisation and moving between different spheres, of, joy, playfulness and travel (ooh) and movement.

Or at least that’s how I saw it. You might have seen it differently. And I hope you would. There are some parts of the reading that I specifically chose to ‘see differently’ and to create my own truth from it – based on what I know, rather than just reading the meaning of the cards. That’s my right as a creative force in the Universe – to decide my destiny and not just to surrender to fate. In all of it I was seeking to listen to my heart and to the Divine connection that lay just behind it.

So, whatever you do… pay attention. Listen to your heart – listen to the message. And trust your insight… because you’re wiser than you can possibly imagine.
